When you start decorating you will have a million ideas I’m sure in your head, the key is working them together well. Setting up a mood board may assist you tremendously as it brings real clarity to visuals. The mood board will really define how the area is going to be.
My key tip here is to rip out an image of each room that you love. You can then refer to that when making your initial selection. We are all influenced by the feel of spaces, some make us happy, and some make us stimulated etc. Think of how you want each room to feel when you do your tear outs. E.g. Bedroom…tranquil, loungeroom relaxed and welcoming and warm etc. You are trying to create your own “Sanctuary” remember…
Then get started:
- Buy a big sheet of cardboard
- Some of the areas that you may wish to address are floors, walls, furnishings, lighting, cabinetry, benchtops and furniture.
- Collect images and colours and swatches that you have in mind
- Dulux, Bunning’s and other hardware will be able to give you paint colour swatches, select a few colour schemes and colour swatches
- Visit some fabric houses and ask for fabric samples of what appeals to you for curtains, blinds, lounges, chairs and carpet If you have existing carpet place that colour even if it’s a paint colour the same on the board
- Place images and swatches on, don’t glue anything down initially, just place it on in rooms groups while you get a feel. Collecting all the elements that you are wanting to include.
- You will soon see that some things look better than others
- Keep adding and subtracting till it looks good.
- Then add your accents of bright cushions colours, artwork you may have tassels and decorator items etc
You will be amazed at the time saving by doing this and get real insight into how the space will look and feel. It is time well spent and a secret weapon when trying to explain to your spouse and friends. Pictures always work better than words.
